The numbers behind the override
Working figures from the Select Board's budget model as of 2026-04-17. These are estimates, not the final warrant amounts—official figures follow the Select Board vote.
What's included: Line items below cover major added-service requests across multiple departments—Fire, Police, Select Board, and others. The MURSD district assessment is the largest single driver of the gap, but funding flows through the town warrant, not directly to the district. MURSD publishes its own budget at mursd.org.
Working figures
| Figure | Amount | Status |
|---|---|---|
| FY27 gap — maintaining current services | $1,269,451 | Budget Workbook 04/14/26 — Snapshot sheet (Total Revenues $26,138,040 less Total Expenditures $27,407,491 at level service). |
| FY27 gap — with additional department requests | $1,700,903 | Budget Workbook 04/14/26, as amended at April 14 Select Board & Finance Committee vote. Approved added-service total: $431,952. |
| Working override amount | $1,100,000.00 | Select Board vote, April 14, 2026 — official ballot question amount ($1,100,000). School assessment increase of ~$2.4M from FY26 to FY27 is the primary driver. |
| Tax rate change per $1,000 assessed value | 0.6821 | Proportionally scaled from April 14 workbook DLS rate ($0.7260/$1,000) to reflect approved $1,100,000 override. Official DLS-certified rate will be set at tax rate setting in fall 2026. |
| Average single-family assessed value (Mendon) | $664,496 | FY26 average single-family assessed value in Mendon — Division of Local Services (DLS). Use assessed value (from town assessors), not market/Zillow value. |
| Estimated annual increase — average home | $453.15 | Proportionally scaled from April 14 workbook ($482/yr at $1.17M override) to reflect approved $1,100,000 override. Permanent annual increase; in year 1, one-time stabilization fund draw ($545,000) may reduce actual net levy impact. |
