Annual Town Election

When: Tuesday, May 19, 2026

Register by: May 8, 2026 at 5:00 PM (deadline to register for town election)

The override ballot question is on the Town Election ballot. This vote actually authorizes the tax levy increase.

Ballot language

What the question said

Ballot language is set by the Select Board and confirmed in the posted warrant. The statutory form reads: “Shall the Town of Mendon be allowed to assess an additional [dollar amount] in real estate and personal property taxes for the purpose of [stated purpose] for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2026?”

Final wording appeared in the warrant and on the ballot. Check the Document Center on mendonma.gov for archived postings.

A Yes vote means

You authorize the town to raise the property tax levy by the override amount— permanently. That increase becomes the new baseline, and future years continue to grow 2.5% on top of it. The money is appropriated at Town Meeting to fund the purposes in the warrant.

A No vote means

The override does not take effect. The town must balance the FY27 budget within the existing levy limit—likely through spending cuts, use of reserve funds if available, or other lawful measures. A future Town Meeting can bring a new override question to voters.

Mail & absentee voting

You can vote without going to the polls

Massachusetts allows any registered voter to vote absentee. You don't need a reason. Request a ballot from the Town Clerk or apply online through the Secretary of State.

Completed ballots must reach the Town Clerk by 8:00 PM on Election Day to be counted. Request early to allow time for mailing.
